New Year’s Resolutions 2021

It’s that time of year again when we start making New Year’s resolutions. Last year, the top three resolutions were exercising more, losing weight and eating more healthily. However, 2020 was a year unlike any other and has made many rethink this annual ritual. The New York Times recently published an article encouraging people to downsize resolutions this year and this article in says that the only resolutions we should make for 2021 are those that will make our lives less stressful. After a tough year of dealing with a pandemic, lockdowns, environmental disasters and political fractiousness, we’ve put together a list of some low stress, low commitment resolutions that can help you have more peace of mind in 2021 (and made suggestions on how you can kickstart those resolutions with some items from the indie brands we’ve partnered with).

Resolutions for a less stressful 2021

1. Try keeping a journal

Journaling can be an amazing creative outlet. Journaling is the perfect resolution as it’s all about reflection and contemplation. It can help you gain new insight and clarify values and needs. It can also help you plan and realize many of the other items on your list of things that you want to learn and ways you’d like to grow. By writing down your thoughts and feelings it can also help you deal with stressful events. We recommend these beautiful handcrafted leather journals that are slow made in Canada and are a joy to write in.

2Be more eco-friendly

As we wrote in our recent blog article on shopping eco-friendly, during these uncertain times, controlling what you can in your life can enhance your personal happiness. By reducing waste and living a more environmentally friendly lifestyle, we can feel better about our impact on the environment and life in general. One simple and easy way to live a more eco-friendly life is to reduce your use of disposable plastics when eating out or ordering in. We’ve partnered with allBambu which offers a line of zero waste products made from bamboo, including this Zero Waste Box featuring bamboo cutlery and toothbrushes. 3. Be inspired by your surroundings

After a year where many of us have been stuck inside, one way to improve your state of mind for 2021 is by making your surroundings more inspiring. Improving our surroundings with art, scented candles and plants can help to create a less stressful environment. We find these minimalist designs from Coastal Wall Art (that are very easy to stick on your wall) particularly inspiring and we love the Meditate candle from Sara’s Soaps and Candles for unwinding and maintaining mindfulness after a long day.

4. Self-Care

We know more challenges lie ahead in 2021 and that’s why it is important to take some time out for yourself to give yourself a break and take care of you. Breaks are important for restoring your mental health and staying resilient. By taking time out to take care of yourself, it will help give you the strength you need to take care of others. Check out our beauty and wellness collection for some ideas on how you can spoil yourself, including with this relaxation bath bomb set.

5. Healthy Eating

We know this is one of the most common resolutions and the pressure to eat healthily can stress people out. However, a healthy diet and lifestyle can help us better manage the physical conditions caused by stress. One of the most challenging parts about eating healthy is the temptation to snack on unhealthy foods. We recommend the Vegan Snack Box as simple and efficient way to start improving your snacking habits as you begin your new year.

Final thoughts

We are all united this year in hoping that 2021 will be a better year. 2020 was a rough year and just surviving it was an accomplishment for many people, so don’t put too much pressure on yourself. And remember, even if you don’t completely achieve all of your goals, it’s important to celebrate the progress that you make towards positive change. We wish you all a happy and healthy 2021!
